What Makes Senior Living Construction Different?
June 14, 2023
Senior living construction and renovation is not for everyone. Working in this industry takes experience, patience, and focus on the details. It's very important to build a team that has experience and knowledge of the senior living industry to make a project thrive. As a specialized, senior living focused construction company, The Bridge Group Construction is equipped to handle all renovation and construction projects big and small. Senior living is why we exist.
Hear more about what makes senior living construction different in this video from Founder Lucas McCurdy.
Q: What are the different types of senior living communities?
A: There are many different types of senior living communities, usually based on wellness, lifestyle, or acuity. However, people outside the industry often confuse senior living with nursing homes, which is not usually the case. Senior living has its own industry and communities, such as assisted living, independent living, and memory care. Combining these types of communities creates a full continuum of care. Senior living is a dynamic industry that offers a variety of services for people at different stages of their lives.
Q: What kind of knowledge does someone need to do senior living construction?
A: You need experience! That experience you only gain by doing the work. I've been in this industry for nearly 15 years and I've learned some things the hard way. If you have a natural sense of curiosity and passion behind what you're doing, why not dive in and learn all the nuances and constraints that would take to do a complicated project inside an open operated building. In senior living communities, sometimes complicated projects are simply painting walls, but this is a big deal because this is where seniors live. This is where older adults are being cared for. At The Bridge Group Construction, we take that responsibility very seriously.
Q: How can construction or renovation play an important role in a resident's well-being?
A: The living environments of older adults are crucial to their well-being. We take into consideration how they live inside their units and their homes, and common spaces when designing a community for people to live and to thrive in. At The Bridge Group Construction, we have a lot of experience in revitalizing older communities that were built in the 1990s and early 2000s. We believe that now is the perfect time to reimagine and modernize these spaces, and we get a great sense of joy and satisfaction of working with designers, owners, and operators to help execute their visions and their dreams of reimagining these spaces inside senior living communities.
Q: What are some of the things residents and families are looking for in an updated senior living community?
A: Residents and families are looking for a lifestyle. They're looking for safety. They’re looking for wellness, and they're looking to thrive. They're looking to walk into a space that feels comfortable to them, a space where they can really see themselves living. Transitioning from home into a congregate care setting, such as a senior living community is a very emotional process. Anything that operators can do from a design and aesthetics aspect to help that transition can be very beneficial to a community’s census and occupancy. Ultimately, the common goal is for residents to not only live in communities, but to thrive and love their new home.
Project Highlight: Wyndham Court in Plano.
One of the biggest transformations in our company's history was the Wyndham Court project in Plano, Texas. We completely re-imagined the community’s footprint, making major structural changes to the main level. Our team brought in structural steel beams and redesigned all of the spaces from the lobby to the offices. We also built a brand new bistro, dining room, and other amenities. It was a major undertaking that required a lot of communication, patience, and attention to detail. Seeing the residents living and thriving in these new spaces almost a year later brings us deep satisfaction.
